Shootback empowers young people to tell their own stories and express their creative voices through photography, writing, and critical thinking about the world around them. Founded in Nairobi, Kenya in 1997 by American photographer Lana Wong, Shootback started by putting cameras in the hands of teens in Mathare– one of Africa’s largest slums–  and culminated in the publication of Shootback: Photos by Kids from the Nairobi Slums, a documentary film, and an international traveling exhibition. Eighteen years on, Shootback continues to train a new generation of young photographers in Mathare and eight of the original Shootback students are now professional photographers and filmmakers.

Shootback DC has collaborated with the local nonprofits Reach Incorporated, Shout Mouse Press, and City Year DC to help bring photography and writing programs to at-risk youth. Four books have come out of these collaborations and will be available for purchase on the night. A book featuring the work of Kenyan Shootback star Julius Mwelu and the Mwelu Foundation will also be available. All proceeds to benefit the respective nonprofits.

Please come ready to look, learn, and be inspired by the talent of Kenyan and DC youth!

The Shootback exhibition will be on view until March 13, 2015.
